Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in 1880, near Düsseldorf in Germany. During childhood, he suffered a multitude of illnesses resulting in muscular weakness. Determined to overcome his weakness, he dedicated his life to become more physically strong. During the First World War, while he was interned, his experiences allowed him to develop an authentic method of physical and mental conditioning, which he perfected over the subsequent 50 years, until his death in 1967.
